Claire Messud - NYC

Messud_2013

Cambridge in America invites you to join author Claire Messud (Jesus College) while she is on tour!

Claire Messud was educated at Cambridge and Yale.  Her first novel, When the World Was Steady, and a subsequent book, The Hunters, were both finalists for the PEN/Faulkner Award; her second novel, The Last Life, was a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year and Editor's Choice at The Village Voice. Three of her books were New York Times Notable Books of the Year. She has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Radcliffe Fellowship, and in 2003 received the Strauss Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The-Woman-Upstairs-ReviewA new novel from the author of The Emperor's Children (2007). "Ms. Messud's writing shows a growing mastery of mood. Comedy, pathos, sadness: nothing seems beyond her. Her new book has all this - and more....not a pretty read, but that is precisely what makes it so hard to put down." - The Economist. "This psychologically charged story feels like a liberation. Messud's prose grabs the reader by the collar." - The New York Times.

Nicholas McGegan at the Sarasota Music Festival

nic-mcgegan-for-email

Sarasota Music Festival

Conductor: Nicholas McGegan (Corpus Christi)
Concertmaster: Noah Bendix-Balgley

Handel

*Concerto Grosso in G Major, Op.6 No. 1, HWV 319

Mozart

*Piano Concerto No. 16 in D Major, K. 451 - Robert Levin, piano

Mendelssohn

Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, Op. 56 (Scottish)

Making his Festival debut, conductor Nicholas McGegan’s (Corpus Christi) infectious joy will transport you into these three vibrant pieces. Handel’s masterpiece is among the most popular Baroque works.  You’ll enjoy its stately elegance and effusive cheer. Mozart himself described his Concerto No. 16 as music “to make the performer sweat.” As one of America’s preeminent performers of Mozart’s music, Robert Levin is the ultimate pianist to truly showcase this great work. Our Festival season ends in stormy Scotland, with a robust symphony by Mendelssohn.  Inspired by the landscape and ruins of Scotland, this is a work justifiably beloved by generations and an impressive finale for the 49th Sarasota Music Festival.
