In honor of the University of Cambridge's 800th anniversary (1209-2009), and in recognition of Cambridge's eight centuries of "transforming tomorrow," representatives from Cambridge in America, alumni of the University, and visitors from Cambridge rang the Closing Bell at the NASDAQ Market Site in New York City's Times Square. The event celebrated Cambridge’s eight centuries of imaginative, ground-breaking advances and discoveries – many of which have launched new businesses and whole new industries, as has NASDAQ over the past forty years.
Onlookers in Times Square were treated to a dazzling video display of iconic Cambridge images towering above. During the hour surrounding the event, the images were projected on a massive 19,000-square-foot LED display system, spanning the entire south side of the Square at 43rd Street from Broadway to Seventh Avenue, from the seven-story NASDAQ Tower on the east to the 22-story Thomson Reuters sign on the west. Further north on Times Square, the Morgan Stanley text-display panel also saluted Cambridge’s 800th Anniversary.
In the NASDAQ studio, on the ground floor of the NASDAQ Tower on Broadway at 43rd Street, Dr. William H. Janeway, Chairman of the Board of Cambridge in America, Co-Chair of the University of Cambridge’s 800th Anniversary Campaign, offered congratulatory remarks, after a welcome from NASDAQ Vice President Karin McKinnell. Joined on the podium by representatives, alumni, and friends of Cambridge, Dr. Janeway then rang the NASDAQ Closing Bell at precisely 4 p.m.
Adjacent to the podium in the NASDAQ studio was an eight-foot-tall “Octo,” the number 800 -- unofficial mascot of Cambridge’s 800th Anniversary, making its North American debut.
This was the kick-off event of a series of celebrations across the U.S. – in Cambridge, Mass., New York City, and San Francisco – commemorating the University’s 800th Anniversary and its global impact.
The Closing Bell-ringing was also broadcast on US cable-TV channels CNBC, Fox Business, and Bloomberg. (Perhaps in Cambridge’s honor, the NASDAQ index closed the day nine points up).
