Alistair Cooke

Alistair Cooke was a British American broadcaster, journalist, and writer, best known for his long-running radio program Letter from America, which aired on the BBC for over 58 years. Born in 1908 in Manchester, England, Cooke moved to the United States in the 1930s and became a naturalized American citizen. Renowned for his wit, insight and eloquent storytelling, he provided listeners with an informed and accessible perspective on American life, politics, and culture. Cooke’s journalistic career also included work for The Guardian and The New Yorker, and he authored several books, including The American Homefront and Six Men. In 1971, he became the host of Masterpiece Theatre, the PBS showcase of British television, for which he gained massive popularity in the United States. He was also awarded a Jacob’s Award in 1972 for his 13-part series, America: A Personal History of the United States, one of the few non-Irish programmes to do so. Read more.
